To be honest it is the last thing I wanted to hear, I have 12 days to complete my dissertation and turn it into one of the best pieces of writing I have produced in my life so far and you think it is a good idea to give me over 500 pieces of artwork?
This is going to be the hardest thing not to open EVER.
We thought you’d like to know that production was quicker than we had anticipated, so we are now sending you your copy of The King Of Limbs Newspaper Edition.
may, what is wrong?
why don’t you stay in the sun?
won’t you come out to play?
i see you hide behind the gate.
you don’t share what you’ve got
you save it all and keep it locked
you want to please me in mind?
well, i’m safe but you seem to be blind.
don’t you see your dreams
are sleeping down in me?
you don’t need to stop the rebellion,
i’ll push you when you creep.
just come back.
may, why are you down?
we can’t see what went wrong.
you’re equipped with a gun
and shot all the rebels down.
don’t you see your dreams
are sleeping down in me?
you don’t need to stop the rebellion,
i’ll push you when you creep.
just come back.
you think your mind will change.
all your life your mind has changed.
you know that some will go
and some of them will never know.
my head is mine
and your head is yours.
don’t try to change it
that’s the way it goes.
So Radiohead decided to release the two songs that they released for record store day for free no less.
Quite a surprise to say the least.
I think this does re-open the debate on whether Radiohead will be releasing a second album when their ‘Newspaper Album’ ships in early may which claims to include 2 LP’s and 2 CD’s
I am intrigued to see what will actually arrive when I get mine.
As for the songs themselves, Supercollider is a very interesting piece, it seems very seperate to the ‘King of Limbs’ which isn’t surprising considering that it wasn’t finished till March this year. It runs to an epic 7 minutes but doesn’t seems to have much of a climax - in a good way.
It just kind of sits there, holding your attention the beat is totally electronic, the singing is a typical Thom Yorke whine but the actual track has a vague oriental feel to it which is nice.
The Butcher is a very different track. More full of energy and definitely a darker track.
It still is worth listening to, it has been a while since Radiohead have released such a track!
Should bloggers get a piece of the pie? Thoughts on the sale of the Huffington Post
A you may have seen, the recent outcry over the sale of the Huffington Post to AOL has once again opened up the debate on the differences between professional journalism.
Some of the 9000 ‘professional bloggers’ that provided the free content for the site have been quite hurt by the fact that they are not being paid at all after the company was sold for over 300 million dollars.
Do they deserve to be paid?
Considering the fact that they knew they were providing content for free it is somewhat surprising to see this uproar from the content providers.
It is understandable that they would be pissed off that the company was sold to the type of organisation that the Huffington post didn’t want to be however the bloggers are probably coming at this from the wrong angle.
They knew what they were getting into, there was - it seems - no indication that the organisation was never going to be sold so they do appear not to have much of a case.
It is a shame that a company that made a profit of 18.5 million dollars from advertising revenue alone never decided to pay any of the writers as the content they were providing was definitely of a high calibre as otherwise the site would never have garnered the readership that they did.
Nowadays the difference between professional journalism and professional bloggers is actually quite small. The elite bloggers do put a serious amount of thought into what they are doing and the old adage of ‘stories not being fact checked’ is no longer true either.
Fact is that the gap has closed significantly and it would appear that in this case the gap is smaller than ever.
It is true that a lot of the time bloggers do not write stories in the same way a news writer would. It is a very different style. It is more akin to the ‘comments’ section of a paper.
Therein lies the fundamental difference, journalists are essentially paid to provide a story with no bias and no opinion, something that in many cases bloggers do not.
It is a shame that the Huffington Post has now essentially been given to an organisation that does not represent, the somewhat idealistic views, that the site essentially set out to provide to their readers, so it will be very interesting to follow what happens to the site.
If AOL manages to hold on to the 9000 bloggers and allow them to provide the same content as before it will be quite impressive.
It is still a shame that the bloggers didn’t get paid. It would have been the ‘decent’ thing to do.
Considering that Radiohead today announced they would be releasing a special 2 track record for Record store day does this mean that these are two tracks that will also find their way - perhaps with other onto the King of limbs 2 disc / LP set?
Well, I have now owned an iPad 2 for just under 2 weeks, I have installed over 120 apps and used it for a few hours a day.
So I should probably know whether the iPad is going to turn out to be an overpriced gimmick or a tool I can use on a regular basis… But, of course I don’t.
Although the built in multitasking - the ability to switch between apps without having to close them is great what is even better is how well the iPad 2 can handle a multitude of tasks without breaking a sweat.
Web browsing is fantastic with Safari, I love it on my MacBook Pro and I like it even more on the iPad, it is fast - really fast and incredibly stable. Yes it does lack flash but to be frank I have barely noticed it. Most decent websites are already starting to make available non flash video so that is no longer an issue either.
Calender and E-Mails are handled as well as ever but that is no surprise. So what else do I use the iPad for? Well for one thing I have found it great to review photos on whilst out and about. Weighing a quarter of my MacBook Pro and allowing easy connection to my Nikon cameras I have found it great for reviewing images. The screen is high enough quality to give a proper impression of whether images are sharp or not - something not possible on the small built in screen.
Not having to lug my mac around really is a godsend.
Reading newspapers, again the iPad has changed another habit, this time that of buying the daily paper. I now have a subscription to the I paper. I also read several german and austrian titles something which I couldn’t do in the past.
I very much enjoy flipping through papers without getting inky fingers. Also I love the ability to work with the content in new ways with regards to integration of social media.
Social media is something the iPad absolutely wins at.
Twitter streams are easier to keep in check than on a mobile, facebook is more accessible and other social media are just easier when everything is their on one page.
I love my BlackBerry but the iPad has one up on RIM here.
One thing I know I will never be doing is taking photos.
When I stood in line to get my iPad I did think I would be able to do some small scale editing on the iPad but sadly that hasn’t materialised, not yet anyway.
Apps just are not powerful enough yet although I do think that something with the power of Adobe’s CS2 could run on the iPad but only time will tell.
Adobes stripped down version of Photoshop is more of a gimmick than anything else. It has come in handy for editing images to be uploaded to Twitter or Facebook etc. but that is about it.
For creating content the iPad is not as useless.
I have enjoyed immensely sketching away in Sketchbook Pro or just messing around in Procreate.
Yes its a small canvas, yes it isn’t perfect but to be honest when all I want to do is doodle on the tube it is perfect. I may be useless at drawing and painting but I have enjoyed messing around on the iPad and some of the stuff I have seen some people do truly proves that this device can indeed be a great artistic tool.
It is fun too!
I won’t lie about the fact that 75% of the time I have spent on the device has been for gaming. I quite enjoy the odd tower defence game or just messing around with an FPS for a few minutes between tasks. For that it is perfect. And the graphics have been extremely impressive as well.
X-Plane 9 and Asphalt 6 best show off the potential of the device very nicely although classics such as Tap Tap and Angry Birds still excite with their massively fun gameplay.
Makes working more fun
As I have eluded to, I am not sure. Some things it does really well, and I just find myself working through things I wouldn’t have done otherwise.
I reply to e-mails sooner as the device is a dream to type on in comparison to the BlackBerry.
I enjoy working on it so maybe that is the killer point. It kind of makes working more fun.
So do I see it as an investment? No I don’t but it may turn into one.
Check back soon as I hope to review some of my favourite apps in the near future.
I used to be a bit of a computer gamer… mildly put… and this week got sucked into Vavle’s mind games with regards to this cryptic treasure hunt that is still going on. I felt obliged to lend a hand to a few of the teams and part of what we accomplished was getting the lyrics to this song. Not entirely sure whether it helped us move forward but the 50 or so people that worked on it definitely had a good time.I just thought I would immortalise the lyrics somewhere incase anyone ever wanted them. The credit to those that deciphered the lyrics goes to the IRC channel #valveargmp3 at irc.gamesurge.net who are doing a great job! So to sumarise re: ipad 2, I want the a 3G one, so if I get the AT&T model in the states I'll save £150 and I'll be able to put a UK sim in it and it will work?
re: flip cams I want it for my Floridian and Singaporean adventures later this year and having done a little more research it looks like the flip mino and ultra have max 120 mins of memory which doesn't really work for me because I'll take more than 2 hours of footage over the course of 10 days and I don't really want to cart my laptop to the states just to upload footage periodically because a) it would be a pain in the arse and b) it will take up space and weight in my hand luggage and that means less things I can buy when I'm there. Do you know how good Kodak stuff is? I've found a Kodak version of the flip that takes SD cards so I can take more footage and won't be worrying about running out of memory. I shall provide you a link for reference:

Re: iPad, you are indeed correct in your assertion. It will work if you buy a US AT&T 3G iPad in the UK (in-fact the whole world) without any problem - just get a micro sim of your choice and put it in - et voila - it’ll work!
With regards to the flip cameras, well in that case I guess the Sony won’t be for you. afterall it also has 8GB built in memory and that’s that.
Historically Kodak has been quite good. I mean when digital came in they were one of the pioneers of the technology. However I am just not sure if that is true today. If you look at the actual sensor (the thing that records the image) most of the ones in high end DSLR’s are actually made by Sony - even Nikon’s so for top notch image quality that is still up there.
But just surfing the web there seems to have been a lot of good reviews of the Kodak Zi8 so perhaps it aint so bad afterall.
So considering it does what you want it to do it is probably your best shot…
As my resident oracle of all things technology based I have 2 questions for you:
1 - If I buy an Ipad in the USA will it a) be cheaper and b) work in England?
2- Do you have an opinion on flip cams? i.e. should I buy one?
Thank you for your kind words and as a thank you for enlarging my ego I shall give you a quick response.
1. Buying an iPad 2 in the US will be significantly cheaper than buying in the UK.
To be precise the base WiFi model will cost you £400 in the UK and the equivalent to £305 if bough in the states.
The top mode Wifi + 3G would cost you £659 in the UK and £509 if bought in the states.
They are all compatible in the UK if bought in the US UNLESS you want 3G, then you MUST buy the AT&T model as the Verizon model does not have a sim card slot so won’t work over here.
2. I can only presume you refer to Flips range of video cams, if so I do have an opinion.
I have played with the Flip Mino HD which my sister used to have, which was very good but the screen was second rate and i wasn’t massively impressed by the interface. The actual footage was quite good though.
I also played with the flip ultra II, it was also good, image quality was again acceptable but if I were you I’d go with the new sony bloggie it is more expensive but£30-40 but makes up with better features nicer interface and screen.
It depends though, let me know what you want to use it for and I will better be able to answer your question.
